UX Design: A Case Study

As part of my the Google: UX Design course, we were asked to develop an application based on a prompt. My prompt directed me to develop a menu application for a restaurant in a small tourist town in Mexico.

User Research

I started the course by conducting research. This included conducting a competitor analysis and user interviews with friends and family. Through the interviews, I was able to create personas that would reflect the type of people that would be using the menu application for the fictional restaurant. The personas helped me to go through the process of creating user journeys and detailing each step that the persona would have to go through to complete the task. This was helpful to identify where the pain points were for each user. I focused in on coming up with solutions for a limited number of problems by practicing a variety of brainstorming activities on how to resolve the persona's pain points in their journey.

Wireframes and low fidelity prototypes

After going through the process of brainstorming and refining my ideas on how to solve user problems, I started to storyboard my ideas about how a user would interact with the application I was developing. I quickly sketched out some rough wireframes, trying to make sure that I kept accessibility in mind. After creating hand-drawn wireframes, I moved onto Figma to create digital wireframes. Using the basic digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype that I used to conduct usability studies. You can view my low-fidelity prototype here.

The course then concentrated on testing usability and early concepts. I was able to build a research plan and conduct a moderated usability study. Using my observations from the usability studies, I created affinity diagrams, identified themes, and discovered insights that allowed me to make alterations to the application. I compiled the findings into a typed report and presentation.

Mock ups and high-fidelity prototypes

After making some modifications to my designs, I then moved into creating mock ups using Figma. This process involved deciding on colour schemes, creating a design system, and sourcing images and iconography for the application. Using the mock ups, I began linking the pages together, creating an interactive high fidelity prototype, demonstrating how the application would be used. You can interact with my prototype here.

I also did a number of usability tests with the prototype with my friends & family, noting how they interacted with the app, where their pain points were and how successful they were with completing the requested task.
